Healthcare Recruiting: RN’s, PT’s & OT’s

Wanted Analytics brings us the following: Healthcare professionals have seen the most job ads of any occupation and, due to increasing hiring demand, have been hard for Recruiters to fill. More than 17,000 employers are currently recruiting for healthcare openings, with Registered Nurses, Physical Therapists, and Occupational Therapists being the most demanded. We looked at the talent pools for healthcare occupations to identify how Recruiters and hiring managers can handle the often limited talent supply.

Currently, there are about 8.5 potential candidates currently in the workforce for every job posted online. The talent pool of Registered Nurses, Physical Therapists, and Occupational Therapists are smaller. There are about 8 Registered Nurses, 1.5 Physical Therapists, and 1 Occupational Therapist for every ad posted online for each career. To put this in another perspective, Registered Nurses represent 4.6% of the workforce, while Physical and Occupational Therapists each account for less than 1% of all US workers.

Some locations will see more difficult recruiting conditions. For example, hiring demand in Washington, DC has increased recently. The local talent pool is smaller than average here, with  about 7 potential candidates for every healthcare job ad posted online. In addition, job ads in Washington, DC are online for an average of 47 days (or just under 7 weeks) which is longer than the nationwide average of 42 days (or 6 weeks).

Despite that conditions are likely to be difficult when sourcing candidates, there are a few steps that Recruiters and the hiring managers can take to decrease the time-to-fill and cost-per-hire for these open job reqs. First, Recruiters can look at locations across the US where there are larger talent pools and less demand by employers, which leads to easier recruiting conditions. The 5 metro areas that are currently experiencing the easiest conditions are:

  • Weirton-Steubenville, WV
  • Buffalo-Niagra Falls, NY
  • Pittsburgh, PA
  • Erie, PA
  • Jackson, MS
