Six Sigma & Hiring-What Is The Impact?

Wanted Analytics brings us the following: One of the most common certifications required in job ads is Six Sigma. Lean business processes are becoming more important as companies are using them as a way to reduce costs and increase productivity. We took a look at hiring for this certification to see how difficult it is to fill jobs that require these skills.

The first job that probably comes to mind when you think about Six Sigma is Engineering. Engineers are the most common job to require certification – 9,200 jobs for Engineering occupations were posted online in the past 90 days. This is an 18% year-over-year increase, with Industrial Engineers seeing the majority of ads (more than 7,000.) But, there are many other occupations that require lean training and six sigma knowledge. In fact, Management Analysts were the second most commonly required to have this training (behind Industrial Engineers.) Hiring for Management Analysts with Six Sigma certifications increased 37% in the past 90 days compared to last year, as employers are looking for recommendations to make process improvements across the business. Other jobs commonly required to have Six Sigma training include Operations Managers, Computer System Analysts, and IT Project Managers.

Much of the US has seen growth in jobs that require Six Sigma skills, but none as much as the states surrounding the Great Lakes area.  Minneapolis, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Detroit have all seeing double-digit year-over-year growth. Cincinnati has actually seen the most growth in this region, with 66% more job ads placed online in the past 90 days compared to one year ago. While hiring demand has grown, the local talent pool has not increased at the same rate. Engineers with Six Sigma certifications will be particularly hard to find. Surprisingly, only about 26% of the local Engineering population has Six Sigma knowledge – and this doesn’t include any other skills that may be required of these jobs. For such a commonly required skill, would you think the number of qualified people was higher?
