Skills Needed To Be A Web Developer? Hiring Data?

What are the skills needed to be a modern web developer? How is hiring in this sector?

Wanted Analytics brings us the data:

Web developers have been one of the occupations with the fastest growth in hiring demand over the past year. Now at higher levels than before the recession hit, Recruiters are facing difficulties in filling these jobs due to a difference in supply and demand. The hiring demand is higher than the talent supply. So, we thought we would take a look at hiring demand and the tools, technologies, and certifications most often required of candidates.

During February, Recruiters posted more than 38,000 job ads for Web Developers, a 28% increase compared to February 2011. This is also an increase of 68% versus February 2010, 110% from 2009 and 31% compared to 2008.

Part of the difficulty involved in hiring is that many employers are currently sourcing for multiple positions at the same time. For example, the 5 employers with the highest volume of job ads each have over 200 unique Web Developer positions open. They will not only be competing against the 10,000 employers currently sourcing for these openings, but will also compete against themselves to find enough candidates for each opening. Metropolitan areas with higher demand, like New York, Washington (DC), Chicago, Atlanta, San Francisco, and Seattle, will see more difficult conditions. According to our Hiring Scale, the volume of job ads in these areas is close to out-numbering the number of qualified Web Developers in these areas.
