Social Media Manager: Skills Needed Beyond Facebook and Twitter

Significant hiring demand for Social Media Manager and Marketing Managers. But what skills are needed beyond Facebook and Twitter? Wanted Analytics brings us the information we need:


Last week, we reported that the hiring demand for Marketing Managers has been increasing. Today, we thought we would look at some skills needed by one of the fastest growing types marketing fields – social media.


First, we’ll look at overall hiring demand. In February 2012, approximately 2,600 job ads were posted online for Marketing Managers with social media skills. This is a 62% year-over-year increase compared to February 2011. Social media job ads represented about 10% of total hiring demand for Marketers during February.

The 10 metropolitan areas with the most job ads are posted below. Recruiters posted the most job ads for positions located in New York, with more than 360 ads. This is a 44% year-over-year increase compared to February of 2011. However, of the 10 metros listed below, the highest growth was seen in Dallas, up 115% and more than double the hiring demand as was seen last year.

Some of the commonly required skills for Marketers with social media experience are listed below. The required skills go beyond just Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking sites. Many of the required tools and technologies involve designing and creating collateral, website management, as well as analytical skills.


  • Search engine optimization (SEO) and web analytics (specifically Google Analytics)
  • WordPress
  • Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign and Acrobat mentioned most often)
  • Salesforce CRM
  • Social Networking Sites (Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Flickr, YouTube)
  • Website management
  • Motion graphics
  • Quantitative analysis
  • Data mining
  • Agency management
  • User interface design
  • Video editing software
  • Quark
  • Wikis

If you are looking for social media related work in the marketing field and you have some of the above skills, make sure to include them in your resume. Or, if you are looking into continuing education in this field, consider classes that cover some of the technical skills.
