Digital Marketers: Hiring at All Time High/Skills Needed

The digital age is in full swing and those with the skills to market products are in high demand. What skills are needed to be in the boom?

Spending on internet advertising increased 22% to $31 billion in 2011, an all-time high according to a recent TechCrunch article. Digital marketing is a growing skill set and we wanted to look at hiring demand for this talent. With online ad spending on the rise, we weren’t too surprised to see that hiring demand for digital marketers was at an all-time high as well. During March, about 3,500 job ads were posted online for marketers with digital skills and experience.

Here are some of the most demanded tools and technologies that are required of digital marketing candidates:

  4. Customer relationship management (CRM)
  5. Search engine marketing (SEM)
  6. Web analytics
  7. Adobe Photoshop
  8. Microsoft Word
  9. Google Analytics

  11. Adobe InDesign
  12. Microsoft Excel
  13. Android
  14. Structured query language (SQL)
  15. Agency management

Marketing in general is a hard-to-fill occupation right now due to high demand, so it’s not necessarily surprising that these specialized jobs will be difficult-to-recruit as well. Recruiters in the New York metro area not only posted the highest number of job ads during March, but also increased their hiring demand by 27% compared to March 2011. With more than 450 companies currently competing for this talent, Recruiters are likely to experience a slightly longer time-to-fill than on average across the US. In the New York area, job ads are posted online for about 6 weeks. In comparison, the national average duration of a digital marketing job ad is about 5.5 weeks.
