IT Hiring in Silicon Valley-Alternate Search Locations for Tech Talent

Hiring for technical talent in Silicon Valley remains strong. So where else can you search for hidden tech talent?

The Silicon Valley is a “hot bed” for tech hiring and we wanted to review recent hiring demand for this area. During April, more than 17,000 tech jobs were posted online for the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas combined. San Francisco accounted for about 9,100 online job ads (up 17% versus April 2011) and about 8,000 were located in San Jose (up 26% compared to April 2011.)

The most commonly advertised technology-related job titles in the Silicon Valley are:


  1. Software Engineer (or Senior Software Engineer)
  2. Java Developer
  3. Project Manager
  4. Web Developer
  5. Quality Assurance Engineer (or Senior Quality Assurance Engineer)
  6. Senior Java Developer
  7. Network Engineer
  8. Business Analyst
  9. Software Developer
  10. Business Systems Analyst

The tools and technologies that are most commonly required in IT jobs located in the Silicon Valley are listed below. It seems to be a mix of programming languages and other platforms that Computer Specialists should be able to work on. Do any of these surprise you? With a high concentration of demand in this area, it isn’t surprising that Recruiters are likely to find tech jobs hard-to-fill. However, our Hiring Scale™ shows us that there are some areas close to San Francisco and San Jose that are better markets for sourcing tech talent. The below chart shows Hiring Scale snap shots in comparison to the Silicon Valley area and Recruiters may consider targeting their job ads in these area. It’s likely that they’ll be able to fill jobs faster since alternate locations have less competition and more available candidates in the workforce. While job ads remain online for an average of 39 days (or about 5.5 weeks) in the Silicon Valley, job ads in Visalia average just 31 days – 8 days shorter than in San Francisco and San Jose.
