IT Jobs and Skills in Continue to Be In Demand

IT continues to be a hot area for hiring across the country. What are some of the titles in demand?

WANTED Analytics brings us the data:

We recently reported on the most in-demand IT skills in the US and in Canada. Today, we’re reviewing which IT or computer occupations were most commonly advertised during the past 30 days and which ones experienced the highest growth when compared to the same 30-day period last year.

Most In-Demand Computer Occupations
  1. Software Developers, Applications
  2. Web Developers
  3. Computer Systems Analysts
  4. Computer User Support Specialists
  5. Network and Computer Systems Administrators
  6. Information Technology Project Managers
  7. Computer Programmers
  8. Software Quality Assurance Engineers and Testers
  9. Computer Systems Engineers/Architects
  10. Database Administrators

There were over 739,000 computer occupation job ads posted online during the last 30 days. When comparing the past 30-day period to the same time frame in 2012, only 3 occupations listed above experienced year-over-year growth: Computer and Information Research Scientists (15.1% increase), Geographic Information Systems Technicians (4.5%), and Software Developers Applications (4,1%). Overall IT hiring demand was 5.5% lower than it was during the same 30-day period last year. Interestingly, of the occupations that saw growth only Software Developers was on the US News Best Jobs of 2013 (technology occupations) list that we highlighted in February. However, the remaining occupations on their list were among the occupations with the largest number of job ads (Computer Systems Analyst, Database Administrator, Web Developer, and Computer Programmer.)

The New York metro area had the highest number of job ads posted online over the past 30 days, followed by Washington (DC), San Francisco (CA), Seattle (WA) and Los Angeles (CA). Despite being the NYC metro area having the most demand, New York state ranks 3rd in the US. The combined demand in the Silicon Valley and Los Angeles positions California as the number one state with the highest demand for computer occupations. Texas ranks as number two and is the only state of the top 5 to see a year-over-year increase.
