Hiring for technical talent in Silicon Valley remains strong. So where else can you search for hidden tech talent?

Wanted Analytics brings us the data and recommendations:

The Silicon Valley is a “hot bed” for tech hiring and we wanted to review recent hiring demand for this area. During April, more than 17,000 tech jobs were posted online for the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas combined. San Francisco accounted for about 9,100 online job ads (up 17% versus April 2011) and about 8,000 were located in San Jose (up 26% compared to April 2011.)

Hiring Demand for Tech Talent in the Silicon Valley Area (San Francisco & San Jose, CA) – 4 Year Hiring Trend

Source: WANTED Analytics

The most commonly advertised technology-related job titles in the Silicon Valley are:

Software Engineer (or Senior Software Engineer)

Java Developer

Project Manager

Web Developer

Quality Assurance Engineer (or Senior Quality Assurance Engineer)

Senior Java Developer

Network Engineer

Business Analyst

Software Developer

Business Systems Analyst

The tools and technologies that are most commonly required in IT jobs located in the Silicon Valley are listed below. It seems to be a mix of programming languages and other platforms that Computer Specialists should be able to work on. Do any of these surprise you? Are there any skills that you commonly require, but aren’t on this list?

Oracle Java

Linux

Structured query language (SQL)

Unix

JavaScript

Python

HTML

Perl

XML

CSS

With a high concentration of demand in this area, it isn’t surprising that Recruiters are likely to find tech jobs hard-to-fill. However, our Hiring Scale™ shows us that there are some areas close to San Francisco and San Jose that are better markets for sourcing tech talent. The below chart shows Hiring Scale snap shots in comparison to the Silicon Valley area and Recruiters may consider targeting their job ads in these area. It’s likely that they’ll be able to fill jobs faster since alternate locations have less competition and more available candidates in the workforce. While job ads remain online for an average of 39 days (or about 5.5 weeks) in the Silicon Valley, job ads in Visalia average just 31 days – 8 days shorter than in San Francisco and San Jose.

Wanted Analytics brings us the data:

Engineers have been in high demand and today we wanted to look at hiring for Civil Engineers in the United States. In April, there were more than 3,700 online job ads for this occupation, a 45% increase over April of 2011. Although volumes of job ads hasn’t reached the levels seen prior to the recession, of all engineering fields, Civil Engineers saw the highest year-over-year growth in April. The cities with the most job ads for Civil Engineers were Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Washington (DC), and Chicago.

As gaming, including online, console and legal casino efforts take off, the need for animators has also been increasing.

Wanted Analytics brings us the data:

During the past 90 days, more than 4,000 jobs were advertised online that required animation skills, a 25% increase compared to the same 90-day period in 2011. In fact, the volume of online job listings reached a new high during March, when 40% more job ads were posted online than last March. We most commonly see these skills being demanded for occupations like Web Developers, Graphic Designers, Multi-Media Artists, and Computer Software Engineers. However, the demand for Post-secondary Teachers with animation skills grew about 32%. An increasing volume of jobs by employers has caused colleges and universities to hire more teachers and prepare the next generation of Animators.

The five metropolitan areas with the highest volume of job ads for search engine optimization skills were Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Washington (DC), and Seattle. Although Recruiters in Los Angeles posted the most ads of any city, hiring demand over the last 90 days actually declined about 2% compared to the same time period in 2012. In comparison, Recruiters in Washington, DC saw the most year-over-year growth over the past 90 days, with 77% more job ads than were seen online during 2011.

Animators are most often required to have knowledge or experience of several tools and technologies, including:

Adobe Photoshop

Motion graphics

Microsoft Office

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)

Microsoft Active Server Pages (ASP)

Microsoft Word

Python

Nationwide, companies sourcing candidates with animation skill sets are likely to find them hard-to-recruit, with varying degrees of difficulty in each location depending on the available talent supply. Our Hiring Scale™ shows employers in Washington, DC are currently experiencing more difficulties than average when recruiting candidates with these skills. While growth in demand for this skill has grown, the local talent pool of qualified professionals does not meet the needs of employers. Recruiters in this area are likely to compete heavily to attract talent and may experience a longer time-to-fill than many other areas across the United States.

Wanted Analytics brings us the data:

There were just over 1.4 million new job ads placed online over the last thirty days, a 6% increase versus the same time period in 2011. Only four occupations out of the top twenty that were posted (by job ad volume) saw a decrease year-over-year. All of the decreases were within the Healthcare industry: Registered Nurses, Medical and Health Services Managers, Physical Therapists, and Occupational Therapists.

Wanted Analytics brings us the scoop:

Tomorrow is National Teacher’s Day, so we thought it was a good time to look at recent hiring demand for Teachers in the United States. Over the past 60 days, more than 61,000 job listings were posted online for Teachers, a 14% increase compared to the same time period in 2011. From the chart below, hiring is likely to trend up as the 2012-2013 school year approaches.

Below are the 10 types of teaching areas that saw the highest number of online job ads during the past 60 days. All 10 areas saw year-over-year increases. Within the education field, Secondary School Teachers saw the highest volume of job ads – more than 8,500 and growing 24% compared to the same 60-day period in 2011. However, of these 10 fields, Elementary School Teachers grew the most, increasing 31% versus last year.

Of the 10 cities with the highest volume of ads, schools in 8 areas increased their demand. Only 2 – Boston and Los Angeles – placed fewer job listings for teacher than they did last year. Despite the most job ads being placed by schools in the New York metro area, educational organizations in Dallas grew the most, almost doubling their demand.

Time to fill positions is a key metric for recruiters and in-house corporate HR departments. What are the norms when it comes to recruiting and filling key technical roles requiring SQL, Java or Linux skill sets?

Wanted Analytics brings us the data:

Technology professionals are in-demand and we’ve seen hiring demand for these jobs grow every month. The 3 most commonly required skills in IT job ads are Structured Query Language (SQL), Java, and Linux. Although it’s likely that many potential candidates have this experience, since they are fairly common skills, the increasing demand and competition among Recruiters makes these jobs challenging to fill. Of these 3 skills, which one is harder to recruit? Today, we’ll compare hiring demand and talent supply for these 3 skills to see which jobs are likely to be filled the fastest and, for the harder to fill jobs, some ways to fill jobs more easily.

SQL is the most commonly required skill set with more than 56,000 job ads currently being advertised online by employers. Java is the second most demanded skill. Currently, about 41,000 online job ads list this skill in their requirements. Finally, Linux is included in about 30,000 job ads.

Despite being the most demanded skill of all technology jobs, SQL is actually the job with the shortest average posting period. Nationwide, Recruiters leave job ads that require this skill set online for 40 days – or just under 6 weeks. In comparison, job ads that include Java and Linux average a posting period of about 6.5 weeks.

So, if you are looking for Java, Linux, or even SQL skills, where should you be recruiting talent from to reduce your time-to-fill? Our Hiring Scale™ shows the 3 cities with the easiest recruiting conditions for these skills. By posting job listings in and sourcing talent from these cities, Recruiters are likely to be able to source from a larger talent pool, see less competition for the talent, and ultimately fill jobs faster.

3 Best Markets for Posting Job Ads that Require SQL Skills:

Dover, Deleware

Wichita, Kansas

Ithaca, New York

3 Best Markets for Posting Job Ads that Require Java Skills:

Ithaca, New York

Wichita, Kansas

Binghamton, New York

3 Best Markets for Posting Job Ads that Require Linux Skills:

Eau Claire, Wisconsin

Tucson, Arizona

Scranton, Pennsylvania

And, if you’re looking for a potential candidate with SQL, Java, and Linux skills, be prepared to spend even longer sourcing for candidates. Job ads with all 3 qualifications stay online for an average of 7 weeks.

CRM skills are in high demand and growing.

Wanted Analytics brings us the data:

We’ve noticed that more and more jobs ads that include requirements for customer relationship management (or CRM) skills. Below, we reviewed the hiring demand for this skill set, what jobs need these skills, and how easy- or hard-to-recruit these skills are likely to be.

Overall hiring demand for CRM skills has been growing. In February, over 24,000 online job ads required customer relationship management skill sets. This represents a 65% increase in demand for people with this knowledge and experience compared to February 2011, one year ago. It is also up 137% versus February 2010 and more than 200% since the same month in 2009.

Hiring Demand for CRM Skills in the US – 4 Year Hiring Trend

Source: WANTED Analytics

The growth in hiring is seen business-wide since employers not only realize the importance of customer satisfaction, but also as they see their employees connecting with consumers through new channels. These skills are not only being seen for employees that directly interact with consumers (like sales or service jobs), but also highly demanded in technical occupations that build CRM software as well as positions that use CRM programs. The most common occupations to include CRM skills as a requirement during February were Computer Systems Analysts, Computer and Information Systems Managers, Marketing Managers, Sales Representatives, and Management Analysts, all of which have seen double-digit year-over-year growth in demand.

Customer relationship management skills are required in jobs nationwide, but the 10 metropolitan areas with the most ads that specify these skills are below. The greatest growth was in Dallas, Texas where the volume of job ads in Dallas more than doubled in February 2012 compared to February 2011.

Metropolitan Areas with Highest Number of Job Ads that Require CRM Skills

Source: WANTED Analytics

As hiring continues for jobs that require in-depth knowledge of CRM tools and technologies, companies sourcing for these positions are likely to find them difficult-to-fill. Our Hiring Scale™ shows that Recruiters in Washington, DC are currently experiencing some of the most challenges when recruiting candidates with these skill sets. Since hiring is out-pacing the local talent supply, employers in this area are likely to compete heavily to attract potential candidates and experience a longer time-to-fill than other areas across the United States. In fact, Recruiters in this location keep job ads online for an average of 6.5 weeks.

Source: WANTED Analytics

In comparison, the Hiring Scale also shows that the best markets for recruiting potential candidates with customer relationship management experience are Hot Springs (AR), Jefferson City (MO), and St. Cloud (MN). Lower hiring demand in these areas, coupled with larger talent supply, means that Recruiters are likely to fill job openings in as few as 4.5 weeks, which is 2 weeks faster than Washington, DC.

We have long been an advocate of understanding the demographic changes in the workforce and what opportunities are created as a result.

Wanted Analytics brings us some interesting observation regarding the growth in hiring for Financial Advisers:

A recent Investment News article talked about a looming shortage of financial advisers caused by millions of “baby-boomers” that are planning their retirement and also due to the fact that there are fewer younger financial advisers entering the workforce. We wanted to take a look at how hard-to-fill these jobs are and ways that recruiters may be able to fill them faster.

First, we’ll quickly review hiring demand for this occupation. In March, there were more than 3,000 jobs posted online for financial advisers – representing a 4-year high in demand for this occupation and a 110% year-over-year increase in hiring demand. Employers in the New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington (DC), and Boston metropolitan areas posted the highest volume of job ads for financial advisers. All of these 5 metro areas saw increases in hiring demand; however, Boston saw the highest year-over-year growth at 240% and outpacing the national average.

Hiring Demand for Financial Advisers – 4 Year Hiring Trend

Source: WANTED Analytics

The skills that are most commonly required in job ads for financial advisers are:

Microsoft Office

Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft Excel

Financial modeling

Hyperion

Microsoft Word

Portfolio management

Estate planning

Microsoft Access

Asset allocation

The most commonly recruited certifications are:

General Securities Representative Exam (Series 7)

Certified Financial Planner (CFP)

Certified Public Accountant (CPA)

Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA)

Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC)

Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU)

Certified Management Accountant (CMA)

Securities license (NASD Series 7)

Chartered Investment Counselor

Accredited Senior Appraiser

Since the demand for financial advisers is increasing, there is more competition to attract this talent by employers, therefore making the jobs harder to fill. Our Hiring Scale™ showed us that the best markets for sourcing financial advisers are Durham (North Carolina), Winston-Salem (North Carolina), Rochester (New York), Syracuse (New York), and Pensacola (Florida). In these cities, hiring demand remains low, while the available talent pool is larger. Recruiters that are able to post job ads in these cities are likely to spend less time sourcing candidates and see less competition for this talent. In fact, job ads in these areas remain online for as few as 32 days – or about 4.5 weeks. In comparison, the national average is 6 weeks – 1.5 weeks longer than in some of these areas.

With a return of some consumer confidence to the general economy, does that necessarily correlate to a reurng of hiring for retail sales professionals?

Wanted Analytics brings us the raw data:

Retail sales have been booming this year and, with more optimistic sales numbers, hiring demand has been growing as well. In March, more than 42,000 job ads for retail sales representatives were posted online. This is an incredible 93% increase in demand! Department stores posted the most job ads – about 7,400. Office supplies and stationary stores, men’s clothing stores, electronics stores, and discount department stores were also among the retail industries with the highest volumes of ads. These retail industries match up with the employers with the most ads: Staples, Macy’s, Jos A Bank, JC Penney, and PetCo.

Retailers in the New York metro area posted the most job ads during March and saw hiring demand more than double compared to March of 2011. Other high-demand areas included Chicago, Washington (DC), Los Angeles, and Philadelphia. These locations also saw year-over-year growth in demand.
