Do you have a career goal to become a skilled ICU nurse? UPMC Shadyside, a Magnet-designated hospital, is currently hiring a Full-Time Registered Nurse to join our Surgical division. Gaining experience in this division will better prepare nurses to transition into our ICUs.

This Journey to ICU Program is designed to equip you with the skills that you need to become a successful and confident ICU nurse.

You will spend your first year on one of our surgical units listed below and will subsequently be paired with an ICU. In this time, it is our goal to help new graduate and experienced nurses gain the knowledge and skill set required in caring for the diverse and high-acuity patient population of UPMC Shadyside.

About the Units:

ICU placement will depend on the needs of the hospital at that time. The candidate's preference will be taken into consideration. A position in the ICU is contingent upon the employee's performance during the first year of hire. The RN must obtain a Solid/Strong/Good performance rating, lack any disciplinary action, and meet all requirements/expectations of their hiring unit.

UPMC Shadyside's Surgical Division provides new nurses with the foundations to develop and be a part of the future of care. Nurses who work in these units are developed and trained to maintain collaborative relationships with physicians, other healthcare providers, patients, and their families, to achieve desired patient outcomes throughout the continuum of care.

About UPMC Shadyside Surgical
  • 3 Main, Thoracic Surgery - A 38-bed surgical unit caring for post-op cardiothoracic patients. 3 Main cares for high-acuity patients recovering from various thoracic surgeries such as minimally invasive esophagectomy, thoracotomy, lobe resections, and wedge resections. 3 Main also cares for interventional cardiac patients from the cath lab and electrophysiology lab, as well as post-op vascular surgery and surgical oncology patients. 3 Main is a teaching unit with a dynamic learning environment, where nurses will gain experience with chest tubes, nasogastric tubes, pca/nerveblocks, cardiac monitors, and arrhythmia IV drips. 3 Main is fast-paced and team-oriented and serves as Shadyside's surgical step-down unit.
  • 3 West, Orthopedic Surgery - A surgical orthopedic unit that specializes in total joint replacement, orthopedic oncology surgical services, spine surgery, sports injuries, and a wide range of medical management. In this unit, you will experience an exciting range of services including wound care, surgical recovery, patient education, and the opportunity to see motivated patients work to get back on their feet through physical therapy and other nursing modalities. This unit works collaboratively with all members of the care team and participates in "care coordination" where the nurse is a critical part of the patient's discharge planning.
  • 7 West, Neuro Surgical/Oncology: 7 West is a Medical Surgical Unit that cares for stroke patients, postoperative craniotomy and lumbar surgeries, acute and chronic neurological conditions. We also see a diverse population of varied medical and oncology patients, including gynecology and plastic surgery. Among patient care, nurses will have the opportunity to participate in hospital-based councils and committees, as well as, continued unit development and quality projects.
  • 6/7 Pavilion, Surgical Urology/Post-Plastic Surgery - A Medical-Surgical unit that provides care for surgical urology patients, surgical oncology patients, ENT patients, and various medical patients. The variety of our patient population provides for a broad knowledge base of both medical and surgical patients. Most of our urological patients are diagnosed with renal, bladder, and/or prostate disease. This unit also receives patients directly from the recovery room, the emergency room, and direct admissions. 6/7 Pavilion is a teaching unit and our nurses work closely with interns, residents, and fellows.
